The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner has shined both on the track and off in the Verizon IndyCar Series over the last two decades. In 2018, the popular Brazilian racer will tackle a new challenge as he transitions from his roots in open-wheel racing to help The Captain revive Team Penskes storied history in sports car competition. While Castroneves INDYCAR legacy is secure, his newest frontier is the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as he begins his 19th season racing for Roger Penskes legendary team. Castroneves will compete for the newly-formed Acura Team Penske racing the No. 7 Acura ARX-05 DPi, along with established IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship driver and reigning Prototype champion Ricky Taylor. To prepare for the teams full-season return to sports car racing in 2018, Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya and Simon Pagenaud competed in the 2017 Petit Le Mans endurance event at Road Atlanta. With Castroneves leading the homecoming effort by winning the pole position, the team was able to produce a third-place podium finish. It marked Castroneves second start in the eight-hour endurance race as he helped guide Team Penske to a victory in the event in 2008. While hes energized and excited about the sports car challenge starting this season, Castroneves also isnt done with INDYCAR racing just yet. He will back at the hallowed grounds of Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May as he pursues the immortality that comes with admittance to the four-time Indianapolis 500 winners club, as he looks to join his mentor and Team Penske Hall of Fame driver, Rick Mears. In his final full-time INDYCAR season in 2017, Castroneves visited Victory Lane and climbed the fence once again at Iowa Speedway in July. Three additional podium results and a series-leading 16 top-10 finishes placed Castroneves within striking distance of the championship at the season finale. He gave his all at Sonoma Raceway, and ultimately finished fifth in the race and fourth in the series standings. It marked the 14th time in his 20 seasons competing in INDYCAR that Castroneves has finished among the top five drivers in the championship standings. With another successful season in 2017, Castroneves moved even higher among the greats in INDYCAR history as he enters 2018 ranked third all-time in pole positions won with 50, he moved past Team Penske legend Rick Mears and current teammate Will Power for 11th in wins with 30, hes fourth in laps led with 6,036, fifth in podium finishes with 93 and tied for third with 141 career top-five finishes. Castroneves resides in South Florida with his fiancée Adriana and their daughter Mikaella. Gil de Ferran, one of auto racing’s most sophisticated and diverse drivers, made history in May of 2003 by taking the chequered flag at the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 and retiring at the end of that season with a victory in his final race, ending a highly successful 23 year driving career. Born in Paris, France, the son of a Ford Motor Company executive, de Ferran moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil when he was nine months old. He began racing karts at the age of 14 and by the age of 19, de Ferran won the Brazilian Formula Ford 1600 Championship. That success prompted him to leave Engineering College in Sao Paulo and move to England in 1988 to continue his career in racing. De Ferran moved up the ladder steadily. By 1991, he was in British Formula 3 and in his second season, driving for Jackie Stewart’s son team Paul Stewart Racing, captured the British F3 Championship, taking seven victories. He moved into the FIA Formula 3000 Series for the next two seasons, winning a total of three races and finishing third in 1994, still driving for the same team. In 1995, enticed by the legendary Jim Hall, de Ferran moved to the United States to begin racing on the Indy Car circuit and immediately won Rookie of the Year Honors with one victory in that season. In 2000, de Ferran joined Team Penske, the team with the most wins in motorsports history, together they won two consecutive Championships (2000 & 2001), becoming only the fourth driver in CART history to achieve this feat. In addition, de Ferran became “The Fastest Man in the World” when he set the closed course speed record by completing a lap at 241.428 mph at California Speedway on October 28, 2000. De Ferran, is married to Angela, they have two children, Anna and Luke, aged ten and seven respectively.
